Waxing Philosophical about Browsings, Work, and Love

PoddedMeat Stuff
The first and second weeks ratings are in for PoddedMeat. If it were two years ago, and it were the Mark and Darrell Show, I'd be absolutely elated - our numbers exceeded any ratings I've ever recieved on RantRadio, AKA, and the podcast feed combined. On the other hand, I was expecting a bit higher debut than where we started.

The upside is that we increased our ratings for the second week by roughly 170%. Again, a bit disappointing for me - even though we're talking four-digit numbers here, I'm expecting these numbers to eventually rival Laporte's and Rose's numbers. Granted, I don't have a juggernaut like Digg fueling my subscriber numbers, but in time I'm sure I will.

I had some really positive conversations with companies that I'm sure you all have heard of yesterday. I can't say who they are because we're just in the preliminary talks, but I can say this: watch closely during the commercial breaks in the coming weeks. The promos for second season should start running soon, and will provide clues for the types of entertainment programs we have planned.

Running a set of talking head programs is a bit more difficult than I envisioned, and it's taking a few more episodes to bang out what our style is than I expected - on the other hand, I think the shows are coming along quite nicely. I think that NewsCube this week finally found it's rhythm, and RunTime isn't very far behind them. RunTime has a lot more variable elements to it, so it's going to take a couple more episodes before I think it'll gel properly, but it's definately getting there. Luke and Laney are finally comfortable in their skins on camera, and it's starting to show.

Monetization Stuff
As you folks know, I've been searching around for different ways to monetize and promote the network of Oblong Box as well as PoddedMeat. I've managed ad campaigns for companies (before I dropped everything to work on these content based projects, it was something I did for my clients), so when I was sent a link for a PPC management agency to check out, I reviewed the site with a critical eye.

Honestly, they look legitimate, and their FAQ brings up a number of valid points. As someone who has done this type of work before, I think that a couple salient details should be brought up when talking about this or any other PPC management group:

It's just as important (if not more important) that the copy of the landing site as well as the structure of the landing site be designed to entice in further and capture information from the potential customer. PPC advertising relies mostly on tricking the customer to give you as much information as possible about them so you can drip on them later with further sales calls, be they email, snail mail, or phone calls.

All in all, I think this is a fairly reputable group, from the sounds of it, but I'm concerned about the method of advertising they utilize to promote themselves ... I didn't find them through a PPC ad. The only other weakness I see is that their copy on their website is slightly less than compelling, but then they may have gone to another school of learning when it comes to how they came upon their PPC skills than I did.

All in all, I'd suggest if you're going to go with PPC management services, try these guys out on a limited basis.

Quote of the Entry:
[Rizzn's Note: this is just one of the reasons I love this girl]

iris: Love is not an adaquate word I can use to express how I really feel about you... my love for you is more "love itself"
rizzn: That's beautiful, honey.
iris: cause I am freaking bad ass
rizzn: haha

Major Personal/Professional Issues

Well, I'll just come out and say it. I fired Darrell today.

It's been a mighty stressful week, things were tightly scheduled, and if all the cogs weren't in exactly the right place, the whole structure (much like a jenga puzzle) would come tumbling down.

And once again, Darrell failed to follow through on something. Those that have been following the exploits of Darrell and I over the years will not be very surprised by this. He was the reason the Mark and Darrell show got canned on RantRadio back in the day. He's probably by far the least prolific blogger on the network, despite the fact he's had two domain names and three blog designs created for him. He's also the sole reason we haven't produced one single episode of LateCast for the PoddedMeat Network yet.

Nevermind the fact that we are two weeks behind schedule on shooting the show - that doesn't seem to matter to him. Nevermind that I impressed upon him the absolute gravity of the situation if he didn't perform. Nevermind the fact that he saw how absolutely upset and angry I was the one time Hannah and Sam were no-shows to a rehersal.

He still found a way to blame the whole situation on me, as he did with the MADshow debacle, and as he has done with the blogging situation.

I had reached my fill of this behavior, and when he hung up on me after giving me lip and attitude, I fired him.

Darrell is no longer associated with any of my projects from this point out.

Mark Lives

I just got a call from Mark. Apparently, south Florida is indeed a wasteland, as he was calling me from the only working pay phone he could find. He does have a little money and food for a couple days, but donations are still appreciated. Right now, he needs to find a working gas station in the Pompano Beach area, so if anybody can help out with that, please drop me a line at smokehouse@rantradio.com ASAP!

Sprint Nextel sues providers in patent spat
Sprint Nextel is suing VoIP providers Vonage Holdings and Voiceglo Holdings, accusing the firms of infringing on seven VoIP technology-related patents. The suit, filed in federal court in Kansas by a Sprint Nextel subsidiary, seeks an injunction that would bar the defendants from using the communication company's patented technologies. The suit also seeks unspecified monetary damages.

Sprint Nextel claims its patents protect a series of innovations that allow the processing and delivery of voice and data communications via packets over the Internet. The company says that these methods also encompass VoIP. The suit, however, doesn't explain how the companies are violating the patents.

Michael Rupert Ruminations
I think I’ve figured out my problem with Michael Rupert.  I’ve really been trying to like the guy, find some common ground with him, see if there’s slivers of anything I can grab onto in his writings.  The more and more I read, the less and less I feel that dream will ever become a reality.  The guy has a whole worldview that’s miles apart from where I could ever see myself.  He’s horribly entrenched in an idea of apocalyptic nightmare (not in the TFTA amusing sort of way), and miles away from being able to admit the problem.  Every article I read for the last two months is either MSM tripe or an article by him that paints a picture based off of MSM tripe of what his fantasy apocalyptic world will be like.

I don’t buy it.  He’s not providing hard data.  He’s not convincing me.  The hard data he does provide is likely as not to be fallacious.  When it’s not fallacious, he’s as likely as not to draw a conclusion that doesn’t logically follow.

Joel sent me his most recent article, and I was re-reading it on the way to the bank and the landlord today, looking for a shred of anything I could exposit upon positively, and suddenly I read the sentence I must have skimmed over fifty times before.

In my earlier presentation and throughout the day today, it should be growing clear to you that official preparations for Peak Oil have been underway for some time.  And – as I document in “Rubicon” – they include the attacks of September 11th, 2001 and all US government foreign policy initiatives since then.

There you have it. I’m sorry – and I know I’m going to offend at least three people in the RIC with this one – if you entertain fleeting notions anymore that September 11th was a government conspiracy, and not a bunch of jackasses from the Middle East playing God, then you aren’t playing with a full deck.  Popular Science a year ago devoted a special 60 page edition issue of their magazine to debunking every myth about that.  It’s now considered common knowlege that there was no government conspiracy to blow up the twin towers.

This sentence was in the introduction to his paper. His premise is predicated on a myth.  I simply can’t take anything this man says seriously.  If anyone wants to use Michael Rupert to convince me of anything at this point, they’re going to have to work real hard at it.

Some Predictions of the News
Since I won’t be here to report the news, I’m going to take some guesses, and we’ll see if I fare better than the National Enquirer.  Any takers on this bet?

Liz Taylor Dies Alone, Leaves Everything to her Cat – every entertainment pundit this week has moved Liz to the top of their deadpool.  I’m taking that bet and raising – I’m gonna say she dies this week. Additionally, the cat will immediately die from perfume overdose.
House and Senate Hand Out Corporate Welfare to Oil Refineries – all this talk of Peak Oil, hurricanes, and damaged rigs (oh my!) this week will be the final push that Congress needs to draft some legislation giving the oil industry some odd billion dollars of handouts.
Rove Testifies for Grand Jury
Whitehouse Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove is going to testify on a grand jury, and roll over on a senior or mid level administration staffer.  There’s no way the man would walk in there knowing he’s going to get charged.  The only way he’s going in there is if someone else takes the hatchet.  In the head.
Following Apple’s Video iPod Debut, Adam Curry “invents” Vodcasting
Despite the fact that Vodcasting has been a term in use for years now, Adam Curry will claim to invent Vodcasting on his sattellite radio show, “the Podshow.”  He’ll also continue being a jerk, and he won’t mention BlipMedia one time.
Tropical Force Disturbance Xanadu will Hammer Key Biscayne
Since the hurricane season is dying down, and there’s no hurricanes, tropical storms, tropical depressions, or what they’ve now taken to calling ‘tropical waves’ to report on, The Weather Channel will invent a new classification called “Tropical Force Disturbance” to indicate when the tropics “…think about getting nasty.”  NOAA Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield adds: “In my pants.”
Kidnapping in Aruba Remains Unsolved
By Greta Van Susteren, anyways.  Everyone else in the world is pretty sure Natalie Holloway is dead.

These are fun.  I could do these all day long, but no! It’s time for the …
RICR #3
There were two main topics that dominated the RIC list this week: Who’s going to do the guest columns, and the QCF debacle.  I encourage you, if you are in any way interested or have listened to, or know the culture of internet radio or rantradio, to go read that forum thread.  I laughed non-stop for a good thirty minutes.  It’s just comical.  It’s sad to see a good show go, but when you break the rules, you get in trouble.  I know that better than anyone.

In other news, Darrell released Haunted Road, a short film.  For every shoe in the road, there’s a story.  Go see this one, it’s pretty neat. Elsewhere, Smokehouse posted a few times, a few of them about the QCF thing, as well as a short post about nappy stripper teeth.

Kelly went on vacation and Jon celebrated a birthday.  It’s too late to look smart, but you can still look friendly – go wish him a happy belated. He also firmly believed that Serenity was better than Star Wars. Meanwhile, my buddy Rob experienced an eclipse followed by extreme wetness out in Africa, all the while finding time to change his site design.  Again.

Lastly, but not leastly, MC Chris posted his new tour dates.  See him, then go see him again!

I’m out guys – See you in a week.

A little bit of everything before I get back to work

If you emailed me between about 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM yesterday, I need you to email me again, as I had a minor workstation crash that I spent the better part of the evening recovering from. In other news, I’m getting pretty excited about my upcoming adventure a few weeks from now in iRP, where my little kobold is going to lead a band of adventurers to the northern Temple of Bianesse.  So far, the party looks like it’s going to contain the following assorted characters: a junkie Kei’Dyn (a catlike race – this one’s poison is catnip), a one-armed ameteur dwarven mage, a cross dressing Urdon, and possibly a female halfling troubadour, all led by my character, a 3’9” ninja kobold.  I’m not sure if this is going to be a comedy or a tragedy, but it will definately be one or the other.

I’ll check with the GM and see if there’s any interested in just observing if I can give out the server info here on the blog.  If you’re interested in participating though, just head on over to the site.

The fabled Blip migration should be done by the end of the day.  We’re going to flip the DNS switch tonight, assuming all goes well.  Some podcasts may not be available for a short period of time, and we may have some weird outages for as many as three days, but it’s the weekend, and it’s typically a slightly lower traffic time for the site.  By Monday we’ll definately have all this straightened out (famous last words, yes, I know).  All this means is that I’m going to be harder to get a hold of this weekend than normal, but I do want you to report to my email any irregularities you experience, as I’ll be relying on you guys to tell me how the DNS propogates.

Michael Brown of FEMA and his Statements
I wonder how many of you read your homework last night like I told you to…  probably not many, and I don’t blame you.  That is one long winded opening statement.  There are, however, some passages from it that I’d like to point out to you that have been completely glossed over by the MSM, and to a large extent the blogging community (if only because no one broadcast the statement in its entirety except C-SPAN, and only then just the first time, no repeat).

There is this prevailing opinion of late that Michael Brown is part of some crony network, an old friend of the Bush family or something that got the job by being the friend of a drunken cokehead bound for presidency at the right place at the right time.  I think what the hearings and especially his opening statement shows is that this is not true at all.  Don’t get me wrong, there is examples of this in the Bush cabinet for instance, but the director of FEMA was qualified for his job, as it turns out.  This is simply an example of the press piling onto the wrong guy, and supressing the evidence of their mistake.

FCC blinks again on VoIP disconnects
For a second time, the FCC has postponed a deadline affecting VoIP providers that failed to get all of their customers to acknowledge 911 service limitations. Customers that hadn't responded to their providers' notifications faced termination of their service last Wednesday. The agency on Tuesday agreed to extend the deadline by another month, acknowledging the work many of the providers had already done to inform their customers of the limitations of 911 over VoIP. The original deadline set by the FCC was Aug. 29.

The FCC now says it won't begin enforcing the rule until Oct. 31. Many VoIP providers have already submitted reports, and the FCC has felt encouraged so far by the level of compliance. In a public notice, the FCC said that 21 companies had received notices of 100 percent compliance, and at least 32 others had heard back from more than 90 percent of their customers.

From the “Privacy is Dead, Get Over It” Department
Alberta1All over Canada, local police departments are making use of fake recycling bins to trap speeders in residential zones, according to numerous email reports we’ve been getting.  One rizznite sent photographic proof (ostensibly taken by a the local media) of police officers setting up one of these trashy speed-traps.

They basically use radar guns to track your speed, and if you exceed the limit, take your photograph. From the emails I’ve recieved, they appear to be in use in Alberta, as well as Calgary.  I used to think this type of stuff only happenned in Britian, but now it’s creeping into North America.  The United States is next.  Several cliched quotes Alberta2come to mind.  If we don’t say something about it, we’ll all have to drive the speed limit soon! According to my research, ones very much like these units have been used in South Australia and Germany as well.

I’m of the opinion that our country’s personal transport system is oppressive enough.  Just by joining the driver’s club in most states, you waive several very important civil rights, subject yourself to the high cost of moving yourself around the distances that our advanced society requires, as well as risk being harassed routinely by whatever local yokel street beat cops you may be nearby to.  The United States (and I would imagine Canada as well) can’t afford too many more significant barriers to private transportation before it has a significant negative impact on the economy.

Alberta4Consider the cost of insurance, car maintainence, gas, and now guaranteed ten or so speeding tickets a year?  Think about it.  How often do you go 20 mph in a 15 mph or 40 mph in a 35 mph?  No matter how much negative reinforcement that goes to your pocketbook a year for minor infractions, a lot of us have a lead foot that gets away from us on occasion, no matter how hard we try.  The camera won’t care if you’re going 5 of 35 over the speed limit, and since these things are so cost effective, it won’t take long before they spread to 80% (or more) citywide coverage.  They’re cash machines for a city.  Think about it!

Fetuses found at Bogota Airport
In a very disgusting turn of events, Colombian police have found the bodies of three human foetuses hidden in statues destined for the United States. The discovery was made by officers searching for contraband at Bogota Airport on Tuesday.

The corpses were wrapped in plastic and concealed inside statues of Christian icons, which were smashed open. According to Colombian police chief Gen Jord Alirio Varon, the four- to five-month-old foetuses could have been intended for use in Satanic rituals. He said officials are trying to find out who sent the packages, which came from Barranquilla in Colombia and were destined for Miami in the US.

Of course, I’ve read by a lot of liberal bloggers who’ve blogged this that it was more likely they were on their way to be used for stem-cell research.  What these bloggers fail to recognize is that stem-cell research isn’t illegal, just not government funded.  There would be no reason for the dead babies to be smuggled in, as there is a ready supply in America of our own to use. Gen Varon said the foetuses were found alongside crucifixes and medals, which is what probably gave rise to the ritualistic angle.

RICR #2: The Next Generation
It’s Friday again, so this must be the Rizznite Inner Circle Roundup.  Of course the really big news is that Smokehouse got a smokin’ hot chick to DJ on Rant by the name of Soccergirl. I’m sure all of us rant heads are going to enjoy the sexy goodness on the Talk station now.  I mean, come on guys, how long has it been a complete sausage fest over there.  It’s a good thing.  In other news, Kelly turned into an aunt (of sorts) as her ‘homefrye’, and best friend Jayne had a baby.

Lucas Dwayne A——. (last name withheld) was born sometime on September 25, 2005. Jayne was heard saying, “ Kel! I have a healthy baby boy and he is so awesome. Yeah:) YEAH!!!!”

The next day, Darrell was pitched into the throes of a horrendous depression after viewing a ‘very special’ Daria episode, only to be fully recovered three days laterJon, on the other hand, has decided to take a zen-like approach to his social and personal life in order to suppress the depression typically brought on by failed romantic endeavors or sad episodes of Daria.  As if this upturn in his approach to life wasn’t enough to make us all want to be Jon, he too (much like myself on Tuesday) was invited to go pre-screen the nunreleasedB9979814 movie Serenity.

Also, as an aside to Jon, you know my policy with Hot Chicks and Rizzn.com – they have to be together as often as possible – which is why I’m stealing this picture from your entry and putting it here.  Bwahahaha.

Finally, from the RICR mailing list, not a whole lot of activity again this week, but a few comments came in from Matthew and VikiBabbles.  Regarding the Michael Brown transcript, Matthew said:

Wow, Rizzn, I am glad I had an opporitunity to read this transcript. I found it very enlightening. I had just assumed that he was another suit latched onto Bush's crony network. That part about FEMA's real function and the size of it's budget, is gold. In particular, where Brown goes on TV and tells the people of New Orleans to just get out despite what their Mayor is saying... That is very vindicating. Good job defending the underdog, you made a true believer out of me, because I would never have seen this on CNN. I'm sure it went totally unreported minus that. At least the CNN crowd knows whats up... all 50 of them.

Regarding the Walken for President Hoax Confirmation, VikiBabbles had this to say:

This is hilarious. I was just searching for myself (yes, I'm that vain), and I came back across this comment I left. WTF was I thinking? I do appreciate ham n eggs sticking up for me. yeah, that's right, I meant Jeb!

Actually, I meant the Bush machine, whoever they put on as the face of it in 2008.

I'm so laughing at myself right now, I can't even believe it. It's good that I'm as drunk now as I was when I left that comment.

That’s the RICR for this week.  Head on over to Rob’s website and welcome him to the inner circle.  Until later guys.

Migratory patterns of soccerballs and spaceships.

Wow, I’m dragging butt today – so so so friggin’ tired.  I did indeed make it to the Serenity pre-screening two nights ago. I’ll post a bit of a review below.  I also figured out why my traffic has been kicking so much butt lately – I’ve been linked three times in the last couple weeks by the National Ledger, here, here, and here.  Also, I did indeed level up again with my kobold character on IRP, for those of you who are keeping track.

Finally, the Blip migration is going swimmingly as I’ve freed up nine gigabytes of storage on the old server, so that podcasts, radio shows, and database synchronisations should be running with a greater degree of reliability now.  I’m still going to say that I’m going to hold off on the email tech support responses for another day because there will be problems in this migration, I just haven’t hit them yet.  When I do, you’ll know, because I’ll be bellyaching loudly to all within earshot.

Naked Podcaster: Soccergirl comes to Rant
SoccergirlI usually don’t write about podcasters who aren’t on Blip, because I tend to believe in promoting from within, but hey man, it’s Soccergirl.  At any rate, Smokehouse, proving once again he’s the most powerful man in internet radio, got Soccergirl to come be a radio show host over there at RantRadio.  The next move is to bring her over to Blip.  One step at a time, I suppose.

I must confess, I don’t really listen to her show, so I’m not sure how entertaining it is, although I do know it’s really popular.  It may have to do with the fact she is a naked podcaster, and a hot one at that, or (as I will find out this week), she may indeed be entertaining to boot!

Her show is scheduled for Tuesdays at 5 PM Pacific/8PM Eastern, 30 minutes, Pre-recorded. Hopefully to start on October 4.

America’s Most Wanted: Tom Delay
TomdelayindictedTom DeLay got indicted.  For once, I’m not going to get all wordy on the political topic today, mostly because I don’t think the topic warrants more than a brief mention.  The man is innocent, all you have to do is read the indictment to find out they’ve got nothing.  I do find it interesting that the so called “fair and balanced” news outlet New York Times is running GoogleAds on this particular story (versus the thousands of other stories that come out on a daily basis) to advertise their paper.  I mean it’s not like I’m real surprised or anything, I just find it slightly humorous they’ve just given up the fight on appearing balanced and have just gone over to being a left-wing-rag and proud of it.

Serenity: One Beer
SER_SqLotBoardOn the copywritten beer scale of movie ratings (pioneered by Darrell and I) where the less beers, the higher quality the movie, I give Serenity one beer.

I went in expecting at least some representation from the movie people (usually, at these premieres, they have some big guns from the studio there to talk or promote the movie), but at this one, all they had was one of the local SouFla radio stations to give away stupid tshirts and ask inane trivia questions (“I’ll take information I’ll never use for $100, Alex.”, “What are two games they play on Y100’s morning show?”).  After the corporate Clearchannel whoring was finished, there was a couple a few rows down from me that hijacked the microphone and proposed to his girlfriend (“Last month, in bed, you asked for a ring, and I pretended I was asleep.  Here’s a ring.”).

Shortly following the bad intro by the studio rep, the bad proposal, and the bad trivia questions by the talent from the local bad radio station, there began a good trailer for the worst movie idea in all of history: Doom, the movie.  Yes, Doom, like the first person shooter without a storyline that pioneered first person shooters.  Much of the movie looks like it was filmed in first person shooter mode, too.  I can’t imagine the movie being any good whatsoever, but I also can’t imagine myself missing that flick, mostly because it’s frickin’ Doom, man!

Then began the movie.  They took a page out of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with the long 15 minute intro before any credits and intro music showed up.  The first thing I noticed was the quality of the music itself.  It really was dynamic and mood setting – something that’s sorely lacking from a lot of movies lately, most of whom seem to be content slapping together montages and medleys of whatever Rick Dees-nuts is playing at the time.

The flick itself reminded me a lot of Farscape – intelligent dialog with well thought out sub-plots.  This isn’t your typical hackneyed Star Trek script here.  It definately fit the genre of Space Drama/Space Western that has been developing over the years.  It also had overtones of political commentary in a manner so sublime, you couldn’t be offended no matter your party affiliation (although if it poked at anyones, it would be the ultra-politically-correct liberal crowd).

It is noteworthy to say that Joss and the scriptwriters avoid the snarky, tongue-in-cheek dialog in this flick that has made Joss a household name (although not avoiding sarcasm and well-placed-humor altogether). There were, also, shades of Clockwork Orange in the movie in some of the original vernacular that was written into the script (ostensibly to account for the evolution of language in the future – i.e. “I haven’t seen any action betwixt me nether-regions in nigh on a year,” from a character that talked relatively normally throughout the rest of the film).

All in all, the movie was more than palatable, it was entertaining.  It’s not going to win any Oscars, most likely, and it’s not going on my top five movies of all time.  On the other hand, especially given the low bar movies have set the last year or two, this one would definately make my top ten for the year, mostly because it avoids cliche and satisfies me in the same way your typical Joss Whedon project would satisfy.

I'm doing my part: katrinalostandfound.org

Given that I’m pulling my hair out on this damn blip migration, I’m taking a break for a couple days to work on what’s turning out to be a community project called katrinalostandfound.org – it’s a public database of people displaced by Hurricane Katrina in NOLA.

If you’re a developer and you want to get in on this, volunteer your efforts over here on this message board. It’s going to be a standard ASP/Access/Perl imalgamation, or at least that’s what it’s shaping up to be right now, although I can run PHP and .net on this server, too.  If you know any of these languages, this is a good alternative to donating money that you might not have – donate your talent.

Right now we’re concentrating on creating an aggregator tool so that we can consolidate CNN’s and the NOLA local media databases into a central place.

MTV Video Music Awards and AngryShirts

I’m off to South Beach now.  Apparently the parties are back on again, and we’re going to go cover them for Blip. Expect interviews, pictures, and video of the following people:Carmen Electra, Kanye West, Paris Hilton, Hillary Duff, Haylie Duff, Orlando Jones, Nick Cannon, Jill Marie Jones, Brooke Valentine, Jeremy Piven, Tori Kittles, Joel Madden (from Good Charlotte), Jaime Pressly, Jamie Foxx, Baby Face, DJ AM, Missy Elliot, Jermaine Dupri, Dave Meyers, Janet Jackson, JayZ, Destiny’s Child, Ciara, Alicia Keys, Fat Joe, Blacked Eyed Peas, and (I quote) Many Many More.

Usually about 5% of the list shows up to these things, so we’ll see.  Some of these names I have no idea who they are, so I’m going to work on puttin a dossier together for my PDA.  If you have tips for me while I’m out, leave a voice mail @ 800.900.2552 x 302, and I’ll pick it up periodically over the next couple days.

I’m also featured on the front page of Angryshirts right now. See?  I am a celebrity!  I’m helping them sell more shirts just by being me!

We have updated stock on the RantRadio t-shirt. It has been sold out of it for some time and I got tired of all the RR people sending death threats so I printed more. Buy them before they are sold out again!

In the photo to your left you will see Mark from BlipMedia a loyal RantRadio fan and a Angryshirts customer. You might have heard Mark on the "Mark and Darrell Show" on RantRadio. He has also been on the Rant airwaves with Smokey on the show "Off in Right Field".

So there you go.  People do remember me.  Hopefully I won’t be eternally remembered for the host of idiotic questions I’m going to be throwing at celebrities this weekend, but hey, here’s to hoping.

/rizzn

Oh, Nixter, btw, I’ll be wearing my RR tshirt tonight.

Am I Famous?

I don’t normally break character like this (by breaking character, I mean putting aside my school-bus sized ego), but I’ve got to ask this question of the masses who are now reading my blog and subscribing to my discussion group (and the few people who subscribe to my RSS feed).

A couple weird things have been happened to me lately.  I went to the Marlins/Dodgers game last Friday, and as usual, my streak of going to see professional sports and the team I was there for not losing continued – the Marlins completely whupped up on the Dodgers.  Going into the stadium, however, these four really hot chicks tapped me on my shoulder and asked if they could have a photograph with me.  Of course, I obliged, but it was a bit of an akward silience afterwards, and so I re-joined my group and sort of filed the experience away.

Then this weekend, I was walking down the beach, as I usually do, towards Lighthouse Point from Pompano, and I was photographed again. Again, by hot chicks, and again, no explanation – they simply ran off after they snapped my photo, paparazzi style.

Just a few minutes ago, I was standing outside the office smoking a cigarette, and there was a lull in the traffic on Atlantic, and this girl in a late 90’s SUV slows down, looks at me and honks the horn, waves, and drives off.  I waved back with what I’m sure was a bizarre look of confusion on my face.

My question to the public is, do I closely resemble some longhaired celebrity now? Am I celebrity now?  Has my picture been circulating some underground email list?  What the heck?  And why do the hot chicks have to run or drive away quickly after spotting me?

These are the things I need to know.

That is all for now.

/rizzn

PS: Speaking of hot chicks, check out Charlize Theron in the live-action Aeon Flux trailer.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/aeon_flux/large.html

My take?  Utter tripe, and a denegration of the original series, but hey, that’s Hollywood, and if you gotta go out like that, better do it with Charlize! MM mmm.

USA Statistics * Facts to Ponder

Hat tip to the Libertarian Party of Broward group list:

Facts to Ponder:
(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.
* Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

Now think about this:
(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million)
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is  0.000188.
* Statistics courtesy of FBI

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!

Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.

BlipUpdate: Directory Service Now Available!

I’m going to send out an email to all the users once it’s fully functional, but I’ve got to turn in tonight – I’ve been doing what I’ve been doing too long to think right anymore.

The upshot is this, though: everyone’s downloads are going to increase substantially now (if they’ve categorized their blogs properly with the directory settings) as there is now a searchable and browseable directory.  I spoke a couple days ago of this being the first step towards bringing unbiasing advertisment.

Unfortunately, it looks like my weekend is going to be completely taken up with dealing with the innundation of new users.  Unfortunately, my programming didn’t take into account supporting more than 1000 users.  I’m working on a queuing system so that profiles will take less than 90 minutes to generate.  As we get more and more users, it takes longer and longer to regenerate the profiles.  This is unacceptable (not to mention putting incredible strain on this machine’s puny Celeron processor).

So it may take a couple weeks before I get done with the stats engine while I deal with the queuing server, but once that’s done, we’re back on the right track.

Snap Back to Reality

Alright... sorry about the long absence from the blog, guys.  I've had my head in code for about the last two weeks.  In defense of my lateness this week, I calculated that I've logged over 100 hours in the last five days getting the last bits of BlipMedia put together.  As a result, by end of business tomorrow (today, I suppose.  If I really wanted to end the ambiguity, I'd say Friday, May 20th).

Better late than never, I always say.

First of all, I want to apologise to all of my friends, family, users, podcast and radioshow listeners, as well as acquaintences that I've blown off this month.  I've blown off a lot of you for this project, but this is one of my big things, and if you know me at all, you know when I really believe in something, I put everything I have into it until I'm done. As a result, we at BlipMedia have something we're proud to launch with (I think :-). If you click on the Blip link over there on the side and check it out, I'd be mighty grateful.

So I'm writing this article to say that my official hiding from the public will be over by Friday next week. I've still a few bugs to work out of the system so we can put online a few extra features I was looking to include in the initial launch, but will soon follow.

Why BlipMedia, though? Well, this company is launched with two real goals in mind.  One of these goals has my idealism about New Media smeared all over it, and the other reflects the business interests of some of the more level headed partners. Firstly, we’re here to become a community for the independent media, a well produced showcase for the best the bloggers and the podcasters have to offer. We’re here to provide tools that make disseminating their information more easily. We’re here to topple the Old Media. Secondly, we’re here to put a viable business model in place to support it (and along with that, make a couple dollars in the process).

The Media Side
I’m sure you’re all aware of the Newsweek thing. Editor of Newsweek Mark Whitaker expressed what’s being called “regret” over an item which appeared in it’s “Periscope” section, saying it was based on a confidential source. They are now unsure of the story’s truthfulness, according to Whitaker. The article’s misquote triggered several days of rioting in Afghanistan and many other countries, ultimately resulting in at least 15 deaths.

I don’t have to say much regarding this, as other bloggers have understandably pounced on this story.  Fox news, of course, was first to associate this with the New Media/Old Media debate last night on Bill O’Reilly’s show, I believe, because Fox thinks itself New Media.  Truth is, Fox itself is Old Media as the rest of them.  Old Media is built upon the assumption that News, Entertainment, and Information content is simply the hook to bring the product to the table (with the product being the viewership).  This ensures that integrity of information is not the first priority, the enticement factor is. If you approach the News Corporation as an advertiser, they will be honest and tell you that Fox News Channel is not a news channel, but an entertainment channel.  That is the secret to their success, not “Fair and Balanced.”

The New York Times’ Jayson Blair, The New York Times’ Paul McGeough, The New Yorker’s Jon Lee Anderson,  Harpers’ Magazine, The New Republic’s Stephen Glass, CBS’s Dan Rather and Marla Mapes, The Boston Globe, ABC’s Mark Halperin, The LA Time’s Roberr Scheer, The Detroit Free Press’s Mitch Albom, and several others all show that the Old Media is busting at the seams with inaccuracies and blatant lies.  The New Media keeps pegging the inaccuracies and exposing them, showing all the inherent flaws in their system. As Darrell briefly outlined in his article this week, the New Media is by it’s very nature immune to these kinds of inaccuracies due to it’s a participatory medium, not a one way communication (which is by it’s very definition an oxymoron).

The Business Side
What makes us different? To make a media organisation profitable, you must make trades on your integrity. You can either sell them to the highest bidder, you can sell them to the consumer of the news, or you can subsidize the effort either through volunteer work or actual capital. I’ve just explained the pitfalls of selling them to the highest bidder, and selling content to the info-consumer is a business model that has failed for years on the internet. The only lasting New Media news organisations on the internet seem to be grassroots in nature (RantRadio, Indymedia, GNN, etc).

When I took a look at what it would take to create a news organisation with these principals in mind, and with the added requirement of staying power, I was reminded of a quote who’s source escapes me currently, but went something like “corporations are mankinds attempt at immortality.” This is true, in a way.  Corporations, in a legal sense, have almost all the rights as a normal human, but without that pesky lifespan issue.  Theoretically, a well engineered corporation can outlive several generations of human beings (many, in fact, do.  AT&T, and all the Baby Bells and Bell spinoffs have long outlasted Alexander Graham Bell’s lifespan, much less his generation). Therefore by this line of thinking, a well engineered, principled media company could outlast all of it’s contemporaries and predecessors.  It was with this line of thinking I came up with the subsization route.

Over the next few weeks, I will be laying out the goods, services, and profit models for BlipMedia, as well as pitching a few products at you, dear readers, to see if I can’t convince you my line of thinking is correct.  In the mean time, explore the new BlipMedia pages, let’s build this media revolution together.

Day Two of Out in Right Field

Thankfully, I mean, it was a close call, but thankfully I recovered the file after my computer crashed in the middle of recording this evening.

You can download a copy of episode 2 of the new "Out in Right Field" here from the riz podcast stream.

Due to popular demand, I'm going to finish compiling a Best of CD of the Mark and Darrell Show. Additionally, I've almost gotten an OK from our favorite program director to get them into random rotation.  Send an email to smokehouse asking for the BoMaD to be added into random rotation on Rant Radio.

That is all.

Pundits are Idiots

When will the pundits of the left and the right stop calling Karl Rove things like "Bush's Puppet-master" and start using proper names like, I don't know, Deputy Chief of Staff?

It's annoying when I clearly know more about politics than the talking heads on the television.

Late breaking update: The Mark and Darrell show is cancelled by management. This is not a bit. Our two and a half year run is finally over, as at this point we likely won't be seeking alternative syndication. Voice your concerns, comments, and questions in the comment area or in a private email here, here, or here.

So so sick

Horribly sick today.  Feels like Viral Pharyngitis, meaning I can't do nothing about it except drink OJ and sleep it off.

Suckage.  I've been sleeping for over 24 hours.  I think I'll make a steaming pile of East Meets West.  (it's a mighty tasty meal that serves four that you can make for less than $2.50).

I'm going to do that now, go back to sleep, and hopefully be able to go to work tomorrow.

Lack of updates: a comprehensive apology, and funny MADshow stuff

Rizzn is back, but not rested, it
would seem.

There has been a distinct lack of updates around here at rizzn.com, and there's good reasons for it.  Just so you aren't left completely in the dark, I'll take some time out to share with you, my loyal 10 or so readers.

First and formost, business at AACS/CyberDyne has been picking up quite well after the hurricanes.  It has actually gotten to the point where I can focus on minor infrastructure systems at the company, like the company radio station or improving fax automation and database synchronisation (instead of a hand done procedure, the affiliate database synchronises four times a day automatically with the content manager).

Disputing and Data Entry

Laura from Disputing

The foyer and the COO's office

Secondly, the Aveary project is starting to take off.  The articles of incorporation are ready to go to press, the site is almost completed, and next Monday, we hope to do our first demo in front of a billionaire (obviously looking for investment capital). This is a big step, and due to the sensitive nature of the product, I really can't go into the specifics of what we're doing, but I can say that this will change the way the world works, once we go to market.

Thirdly, I've been getting involved with podcasting, in conjunction with my radio shows. Along that vein of thought, we had on the Mark and Darrell show one of the rising stars in the Podcasting world, Sondra Lowell, otherwise known as the deliverer of the tapdancing podcaster news (yeah!).  Here is the 30-minute interview between Darrell, Doug, myself, and Sondra ---> (download 13.5 meg, 64k stream).

In other miscellaneous things, I'm upgrading the site to version 7.7 here within the next few days.  Joel and Matthew (currently known as DJ Colonoscopy and the Sh!t) wish to upgrade their credibility a little bit, as they've been making some amazing contacts and working on some comprehensive stories, and everyone keeps telling them that they have to drop the vulgarity in the name to be taken seriously (darn this square world).  In addition, I'm adding a podcasting category to the front page, adding RSS feeds, dropping ndmovies and whatever, and then combing them and a few others into a community blog.  Also, I'm in talks with a few "unsigned" bloggers/podcasters in attempts to lure them over to the rizzn.com community.

Lest I forget to plug this again, New Media News Network is still in active development.  Darrell and I are nearly completely done with pre-production work, and we will very shortly being talks with podcasters in an attempt to sign them up to join.

Well, in about thirty seconds, the COO is going to be breathing down my neck and notice my non-productivity, so I'm going to finish up this entry.

Oh, for absolute hilarity, check out what has to be the funniest moment in recent history of the MADshow here due to James being drunk and calling in ---> (download 949 KB. 64k stream).

Modern Political Liberalism - the new bigotry

[Rizzn's Note: It's getting bad in here.  By in here, I am referring to our country of America.  By getting bad, I refer to what I have taken to calling liberal bigotry.

I'm not going to go into a great definition of liberal bigotry.  Instead I'm going to tell you a story that sparked me on this journey, and then I'm going to simply post some quotes up here from common liberal newspapers and sources, as well as some random blogs.

A few weeks ago, I watched the VEEP debates.  I commented on them, and my comments were favorable to Dick Cheney.  I posted these comments up on the RantRadio forum.  Then along came an idiot named gManiaxe.  He decided he was going to goad me into an argument/flame-war by calling my ideas and judgement laughable ("it is hilarious that you think that ...").

I really thought about how indicative this is of the liberal bigotry going on in America today -- a whole presidential campaign was just waged on that idea.

I'm not going to wax philisophical about it just this minute; instead i'll let these other, more accomplished writers, do my talking for me.]

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown verbally attacked a top Bush administration official during a briefing on the Haiti crisis Wednesday, calling the President's policy on the beleaguered nation "racist" and his representatives "a bunch of white men."

Brown sat directly across the table from Noriega and yelled into a microphone. Her comments sent a hush over the hourlong meeting, which was attended by about 30 people, including several members of Congress and Bush administration officials.

Noriega later told Brown: "As a Mexican-American, I deeply resent being called a racist and branded a white man," according to three participants.

Brown then told him "you all look alike to me," the participants said.

February 25, Miami Sun-Sentinel

Here in Massachusetts, especially in places like Cambridge, it’s all too common to hear people talk about conservative minorities in terms that are patently racist.  What’s galling of course, is the reflexive attitude that all conservatives are racists who want to turn the clock back to segregation and slavery.  If their own behavior gets pointed out to them, they talk about Trent Lott, conveniently forgetting both their own klansman Bobby Byrd and the fact that the GOP forced Lott to resign as Senate majority leader.  You see, it isn’t our plantation (never was) - it’s their plantation.  And the likes of Ted Rall and Ted Kennedy get mighty upset when the fieldhands get uppity.

July 8, MartiniPundit

It's encouraging that the right is less hostile to gays and lesbians than it used to be. President Bush argued in his 1994 run for governor that gay sex should be illegal, while now he feels comfortable hitting up gays for campaign contributions.

On the other hand, the left seems more contemptuous than ever of evangelicals. Sensitive liberals who avoid expressions like "ghetto blaster," because that might be racially offensive, blithely dismiss conservative Christians as "Jesus freaks" or "fanatics."

Take Ted Turner. He has called Christianity a "religion for losers" and once ridiculed CNN employees observing Ash Wednesday as "Jesus freaks." Later, he apologized.

Granted, the Bible denounces male homosexuality, although it strikes me as inconsistent not to execute people who work on the Sabbath (Exodus 35:2) and not to crack down on those who get haircuts (Leviticus 19:27) or wear clothes with more than one kind of thread (Leviticus 19:19).

But there's no clear objection in the Bible to lesbianism at all. And since some fundamentalists have argued that AIDS is God's punishment for gay men, it's worth noting that lesbians are at less risk of AIDS than straight women. So if God is smiting gay men for their sin, is he rewarding lesbians for their holiness?

Those kinds of pointed questions are fair, but sneering is not. And in polite society, conservative Christians — especially Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses — are among the last groups it's still acceptable to mock.

This resentment is global. In a Tyndale Lecture in England last year, Cristina Odone complained: "The chattering classes . . . pride themselves on being tolerant. . . . Yet they share one prejudice that turns them into rabid persecutors: Christians."

Liberals often protest that they would have nothing against conservative Christians if they were not led by hypocritical blowhards who try to impose their Ten Commandments plaques, sexual mores and creationism on society. But that's a crude stereotype, and it ignores the Christian right's accomplishments. Polls show that evangelical Christians are more likely to contribute to charities that help the needy, and in horror spots in Africa Catholics and other Christians are the bulwark of the health care system.

Moreover, saying that one will tolerate evangelicals who do not evangelize — well, that's like Christians saying they have nothing against gays who remain celibate.

April 24, New York Times

I'm just fed up with the rampant hypocrisy coming from a good portion of the left, particularly those who feel the need to take the most extreme elements of conservatism and use them to tar the entire conservative community while simulaneously denying that the extreme leftists are a part of the left. It's hypocrisy, pure and simple. Yes, there are whack jobs on the right, but they do not represent the views of the majority of conservatives; that's why they are called extremists. Get it?

Probably not.

June 17 2003, Shots Across the Bow

What are the truths of liberalism? Good Hate is Love.  The Liberal cause is Good, Perfect, and Correct, incapable of error or guilt.  Liberal Intolerance of Intolerance is not Intolerance;  Liberal Hatred of Hatred is not Hatred. Liberal Bigotry against Bigotry is not Bigotry.  Good Hate is the Righteous Anger of the Democrat.

NewMedia News Discussion

By tomorrow, this article will be detailing the plans for the NewMedia News broadcast.  For now, go here and discuss our talking points from the show.

Links from the MADshow from 10-10-2004.

Breaking News: ABC in for a scandal of RatherGate proportions? See the scanned memo (PDF)

I think this is possibly another gimme to New Media ... an impetus for us to step up to the plate and replace these old media types in a meaningful way. We need to create our own newswire of reliable, respectable, ametuer journalists. We can't let them co-opt our subculture.
